Packaging in a Sustainable Society

Packaging in a sustainable society

Some people think 'sustainable packaging' exists.....

... but that doesn't make any sense

  •  Packaging is just one part of the system that gets products from where they are produced to where they are used.  It's the system that needs to be sustainable, not any one part of it.
  • What material a pack is made from and whether these materials are inert or biodegradable is not important provided it does its job.
  • A pack that is reusable, recyclable, contains recycled content or is biodegradable but does not protect the product, carry necessary information, market the product, store and dispense it, is a waste of the resources (materials, energy, water) used to make both the packaging and product.
  • The best result for the environment is to use packaging that makes the supply chain as sustainable as possible and helps consumers live more sustainable life styles.
