The Living Smarter households were chosen to illustrate a range of ‘typical’ households. Having volunteered to take part, they were only told that the filming was to help understand the lifestyles of people living in the early 21st century, and they did not know in advance that the underlying aim of the research was to examine the environmental impact of their choices.
